What is there to do at the farm

Things to do at the farm
  • Visit our farm stand located in our historic barn built in 1850. Shop our vast scents of our homemade goat milk soaps and lotions, beeswax lip balms, natural deodorants, sugar scrubs and our farm logo apparel. In addition we also have locally roasted coffee and local maple syrup in multiple flavors.
  • Take a relaxing stroll through the barnyard (weather dependent) or just sit and relax and take in the scenery of our barn which was once a dairy back in the early 1900’s and will soon be again.
  • Meet our herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats and snuggle up with a baby or two or three.
  • Get to know our small growing herd of Lamancha dairy goats, they sure love scratches from visitors.
  • When is the last time you got to pet a cow? Well now’s your chance. Our super social Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss calves just love the attention.
  • Sit and watch our Blue Runner Ducks frolic around their pen or splashing around their pool.
  • Watch our milk cows grazing in distant pastures or our mule Annie running around teasing them.
  • Make a day of visiting our farm and the quaint Town of Southbury. There are several excellent restaurants and shops just 5 minutes from the farm.

Our barnyard is surrounded by our rolling pastures where our dairy cows and our Mule Annie graze so be sure to bring your camera to capture your memories or maybe a new profile photo.

Our mini pigs Jessa and Tess can be seen either lounging around the barnyard or grazing in their field.

Bring the kids to learn something new about farming and our farm animals. Farm staff will be on hand to answer any questions and we have educational posters displayed throughout the barnyard. We are currently working on plans to offer various interactive programs to share with you in the future.

Passes to the barnyard can be purchased in person at the farm stand.
2 and under free
Ages 3 to 11 - $3
Ages 12 and up - $5
Thank you for your support! Visiting the barnyard and making purchases in the farm stand help us feed our animals and provided them with the best care they deserve!

Meet our goats

nigerian dwarf goat
Since 2014 our favorite breed of dairy goat is the Nigerian Dwarf Goat.  Their smaller size yet good milk production is perfect for our small farm.  Our Nigerian Dwarf Goats are gentle, affectionate and love to play.  They can always be seen bouncing around the yard chasing each other or playing king of the hill on top of their rock pile. They are accomplished athletes that can surprise you with their ability to clear some obstacles, so fencing is very important.

In 2020 after our move to the farm in Southbury we added two Lamancha goats, Kami and Legacy.  With having more barn and pasture space we wanted to expand our operation to include some full size goats.  We researched the various breeds and everything pointed to the Lamanchas.  They have wonderful personalities, are actually protective of the Nigerian Dwarf Goats, have excellent milk production and are just plain adorable

We currently breed our girls in the fall to have spring kids.  This has proven to be the most natural cycle for our goats and the breeding is easier.  Currently we do not have a buck on our property but our wether Austin will let us know when each of the girls are coming into a heat cycle.  There's nothing better than spring time at the farm when all the kids are being born.  We have been there for every one of the kiddings we've had on our farm.

Our kids are very special to us and we only want them going to the right home.  We ensure that their new home will have the proper fencing and shelter, not have any animals currently living there that could harm the kids and that the new owners have educated themselves on caring for goats.

Being a herd animal we will not place a single goat with a home that does not currently have any goats.  Goats need buddies around for play, socialization, warmth in the winter and companionship.  Once a home passes our process we do take deposits prior to kids being born but we can't guarantee the sex of the kids but we will do our best to accommodate what the new owner wants.  If you are interested in our goat kids and would like more information about the purchase/adopting process contact David at (203) 906-6372 or email guardiansfarm@gmail.com

The cows

Picture
One of the biggest additions to the farm, and I mean big, is the addition of our dairy cows.  Our herd started with two Holstein heifers, Seneca and Majesty.  Seneca had her first calf and the first calf born at our farm the day after a hurricane in August 2020.  Sokanon, which mean "rain", has been such a joy to watch grow up.  Since Sokanon being born we have added a couple more Holsteins, Lucy and Penelope and two Jersey cows, Tiffany and Tallulah.  With the addition of the dairy cows we are planning on constructing a dairy at the farm in 2021 and hope to begin selling cow and goat milk in the spring.

Our flock of egg layers currently consists of Barred Rocks, Silver and Golden Laced Wyandotte's, Ameraucauna, Olive Eggers, Leghorns and Amberlinks.  We also have breeding Sumatra's and Heritage Rhode Island Reds.  We plan on hatching chicks this spring and if you are interested please send us an email at guardiansfarm@gmail.com

In loving memory of our matriarch, Serendipity. We love and miss you.
