To the men & women who are serving or have served our great nation, we salute you. You endure many sacrifices as you are away from home defending our freedom. May you return home safe from your deployments and find the support you need once you are home. Until you return home to your families, may the scent of warm apple pie take you there.
We are partnering with Freedom Service Dogs for our first of many fundraiser scents!
$2.00 from the sale of each bar of our "Freedom" soap (apple pie scent) will be donated to Freedom Service Dogs, a nonprofit organization that rescues dogs and custom trains them to become service dogs for individuals with disabilities. Our support will benefit Operation Freedom, a program of Freedom Service Dogs that was developed to help veterans and military personnel with disabilities regain their independence and return to their communities. For more information, please visit Freedomservicedogs.org.
Having served in the U.S. Coast Guard for eighteen years and having family members, coworkers and friends who have served in the military we wanted our first fundraiser scent to benefit our veterans in need. We found Freedom Service Dogs and found this organization was an absolutely perfect fit. The benefit of FSDA is two fold as they not only save a rescue dog and transform it into a service dog, but they save the veteran that service dog is partnered with.
Operation Freedom was developed to help returning war veterans and military personnel transition from active duty and combat to civilian life. Servicemembers and veterans are placed with highly specialized service dogs that help them find a new level of independence in their post-combat life.
Many returning military personnel and veterans face a myriad of challenges including PTSD, depression, immobility and inactivity.
While some veterans find themselves making a relatively easy transition to civilian life, many face a much more challenging path — homelessness, crime, drugs and alcohol become commonplace for far too many. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grimly estimates that veterans account for nearly 22% of the 40,000 suicides that occur in the United States last year.
In order to combat the problems that arise from veterans with disabilities transitioning to civilian lives, the local VA’s, community groups and on-base transition battalions have been sent to the front lines. However, despite the important work of these organizations, the fact remains that these veterans are saddled with mental and physical disabilities that do not cater to a normal workday schedule.
Their disability, mental, physical or both, does not care if someone is around to assist with picking up dropped items or provide assistance when getting out of bed. The disability does not wait for a mental health professional to be available to level a dissociative situation or trigger a disturbing flashback.
