Since 2014 we have been raising dairy goats at our farm. We started with the adorable Nigerian Dwarf Goats and our herd now includes Lamancha Dairy goats. We started breed our dairy goats for their delicious and healthy milk. Since then we primarily breed them to make our handcrafted goat milk soaps and lotions. Goat milk is so good for you whether you drink it or use it in products for your skin.
Goats are amazing animals and make wonderful pets. They are very sturdy and healthy animals that have no problem with the heat or the cold temperatures during winter. Besides being great pets people also use them to clear unwanted brush on their property. Dairy goats are a very useful addition to a homestead once they are breeding age and you can have your own milk supply.
If you are interested in keeping goats there are a few things that are very important. To house goats you need proper fencing and shelter. The fencing needs to be at least four feet tall and openings that young goats can't fit through. We also recommend one or two strands of electric fencing to keep predators out of the goat pen. The goat shelter needs to be one that during winter the goats will be comfortable in for several days when the temps are very cold. The bigger the shelter the better as it will be less maintenance you will have to do to keep it clean.
Goats main diet is hay and they like second cut hay the best. When planning on keeping goats you want to have space to keep enough hay for the year if possible and this number depends on the amount of goats you have. Grain is only needed when breeding goats or if you have one that needs extra nutrition. We do not recommend giving male goats grain as it can develop urinary calculi.
